  • Conference in the Cloud 2020 SoC Transparency Report Sun, 18-Oct-2020 by Dave Rolsky

The Perl Foundation Standards of Conduct sets Standards of Conduct for how our community interacts with others during the conference and in other TPF spaces. The team that enforces these standards is called the Community Affairs Team That team was available to respond to incident reports during the Conference in Cloud in June, 2020 In order to be open and transparent about this process, we have prepared the following report

  • Malicious Code Found in CPAN Package Module-AutoLoad Tue, 28-Jul-2020 by Dave Rolsky

The Module-AutoLoad distribution has been found to contain malicious code in its test suite. Specifically, it attempts to load and execute Perl code from a remote server during the test suite. While initially this payload may not have been malicious, this is no longer the case. You can read the IRC discussion about this along with some summary details in an email from Ryan Voots to the modules@perl.org list. All

  • Remembering Jeff Goff Sat, 11-Apr-2020 by Dave Rolsky

As many of you know, we recently lost one of our community members, Jeff Goff. Jeff died in a snorkeling accident on March 13, 2020. Jeff was a long time member of both the Perl 5 and Raku communities. On IRC, he was known as DrForr. He published many modules on CPAN over the years, and recently had created a number of Raku modules. As a long time presenter at

Now that the Parrot Foundation has "their own webste":http://www.parrot.org, I will be posting all grant updates to that site. You can see the "latest update":http://www.parrot.org/news/nlnet-grant-update-september-and-october-2008 there right now. In the future, all updates will be posted solely to parrot.org. I've also moved "the page that describes the grant structure":http://www.parrot.org/foundation/grants/nlnet-grant to parrot.org.

  • Parrot Grant Update for March - August, 2008 Tue, 02-Sep-2008 by Dave Rolsky
    in: Grants

Apologies for the long delay in this report, I've had some ongoing health problems over the summer. Allison wrote this report to bring us up-to-date, and then we'll continue with the two-monthly schedule. Parrot releases continue on their monthly schedule. The 0.6.0 release in March reflected major improvements to both the Parrot VM and the Perl 6 implementation on Parrot The most notable change for Parrot was the implementation of

  • Parrot Grant Update for January and February Mon, 10-Mar-2008 by Dave Rolsky
    in: Grants

Parrot releases continue to come out once a month. Version 0.5.2 was released in January. The highlight of 0.5.2 for many is surely the inclusion of a perl6 make target, meaning that you can now take a Parrot release and make yourself a Perl 6 binary in just three easy steps: tar -xvzf parrot-x.x.x.tar.gz cd parrot-x.x.x perl ./Configure.pl make perl6 The end result is a perl6 binary that you can

  • Parrot Grant Update for November and December Fri, 04-Jan-2008 by Dave Rolsky
    in: Grants

November and December saw the usual monthly release of Parrot. However, November's release was particularly notable, as it was version 0.5.0. The minor version number increase came because it includes an implementation of the object design as specified in PDD15. This was a major piece of work, both in the implementation, and integration with existing language implementaitons. The 0.5.1 release was also quite exciting. The major work for this release

  • Parrot Grant Update for September and October Thu, 01-Nov-2007 by Dave Rolsky
    in: Grants

The Parrot team has continued to make monthly releases, releasing 0.4.16 in September and 0.4.17 in October. These releases include more work on the NQP language as well as many updates and cleanups for the design documents As usual, there were also plenty of bug fixes, and in particular much of the code was reviewed as part of the effort to complete the PMC design. I'm very happy to report

There's a little more than 24 hours left in the "Frozen Perl 2008 Call for Speakers":http://www.frozen-perl.org/mpw2008/cfs.html. If you've been putting your submission off to the last minute, that last minute is fast approaching. Submissions close at midnight on Tuesday, October 23. • Parrot Grant Update for July, August, and Half of September Tue, 18-Sep-2007 by Dave Rolsky
    in: Grants

In July and August, we had our monthly releases of Parrot, 0.4.14 and 0.4.15. There were various language updates, but one of these deserves special mention. The 0.4.15 release included an implementation of "Not Quite Perl". This language implements a subset of the full Perl 6 feature set, and will be used within the compiler tools for all languages running on Parrot, and as a way to bootstrap a complete

  • Frozen Perl 2008 Call for Speakers Thu, 06-Sep-2007 by Dave Rolsky

Frozen Perl 2008 will be a one-day workshop in sunny Minneapolis on Saturday, February 16, 2008. We've officially opened up our Call for Speakers and we're looking forward to your submissions. Our workshop theme is "Perl in Practice", so practical submissions are encouraged. Andy mentioned in an earlier post that registration isn't open and would "definitely be under $100". Registration is still not open, but I wanted to add that

  • Parrot Grant Update - May and June Wed, 11-Jul-2007 by Dave Rolsky
    in: Grants

May and June saw the usual monthly releases of Parrot, 0.4.12 and 0.4.13. Between these two releases, there were numerous language updates, including PHP and Lisp. On the Perl 6 front, 0.4.13 was the first release where Parrot passed the Perl 6 sanity tests. This is an exciting achievement, because it means that Parrot supports enough of Perl 6 that the developers can start using Perl 6 to bootstrap its

  • Parrot Grant Update - February, March, and April Fri, 11-May-2007 by Dave Rolsky

Since this update is so late, I'm taking the liberty of covering three months of Parrot work, rather than two. That means this report covers February through end of April of 2007. Parrot has been sticking to its new monthly release schedule, which means that we saw three releases in this grant period, 0.4.9, 0.4.10, and 0.4.11. The highlight of this period is the finalization of the object design marking

Here's the latest grant update as sent to NLNet The 0.4.8 release Parrot marked the completion of a design milestone, the IO PDD. This is a major accomplishment, as the design work on IO impacts much of Parrot's design, including areas such as concurrency and networking. This work was completed by Allison with help and review by Jerry Gay. The next area Allison will be focusing on is the object

  • Parrot Grant Update - October and November Wed, 20-Dec-2006 by Dave Rolsky

Here's the latest grant update as sent to NLNet During October and November, Allison has continued working on the PDD for IO, which she hopes to finish soon. Parrot 0.4.7 was released on November 14th. This release includes design work on bytecode files, embedding, concurrency, and objects. The bytecode file PDD is complete, and is beginning to be implemented. There has been significant design and implementation work on the Perl6

  • Parrot Grant Update - August and September Fri, 27-Oct-2006 by Dave Rolsky

Here's the latest Parrot Grant Update In August and September, Allison has been working on the PDD for IO, which she expects to finish sometime in October or November. Because IO, events, and threads are so inter-related, some of the IO work will spill over into work on the PDDs for events and threads as well. Parrot 0.4.6 was released on August 9. It includes support for several new languages,

Allison Randal has taken on the mantle of chief architect. This means that she will
