The Board of the Perl and Raku Foundation is pleased to announce that [D Ruth Holloway (GeekRuthie)](https://hiruthie.me) has been selected for the role of Community Engagement Chair for the Board. This new position is primarily responsible for serving as a broad conduit between the Board and the communities of users of Perl and Raku, representing the Board to the communities, and keeping the Board apprised of the communities’ needs and concerns.. Ruth's responsibilities include posting regular news on news.perlfoundation.org, and participation in social media discussions on behalf of the Board, as well as outreach to the diverse group of subcommunities that make up Perl and Raku.
Board President Stuart J Mackintosh says, “It is with some excitement that I welcome Ruth to this new role at the Foundation. This appointment addresses a long-standing gap between the Foundation and communities and I anticipate that Ruth's passion to connect, patience, and willingness to listen will encourage more coordination and joined-up thinking which will be a benefit to us all.”
Discussing her new role, Ruth says, "I'm very excited about this new purpose for my life. I believe very strongly that Perl and Raku are not merely about software languages, but about people; our people have been, and always will be, our greatest strength as a community. Many of those people have been underheard or underserved by the Foundation, and reaching out to them and finding ways for the Foundation to serve their needs in the community is my passion."
One of the specific responsibilities of the Community Engagement Chair is to make themselves available to members of the communities who want to say something to the Board, either for information, subsequent action, or mediation and resolution of disputes within the community. Ruth welcomes your input and contact about anything you want the Board to know. She can be found most days (Eastern US Time) on the Perl Foundation Slack, on Libera Chat IRC and irc.perl.org as GeekRuthie, on Matrix at @geekruthie:nerdch.at or in the Perl Matrix room at #perl:nerdch.at. On Mastodon, she’s at @geekruthie@hachyderm.io . You can email her any time at ruth AT perlfoundation.org.
The Communities and Reps meeting will return in February 2025 under Ruth's leadership, with a new format and more outreach to subcommunities of the Perl and Raku ecosystems. Look for more information soon, and ask Ruth for information on how you can connect!
